Insurance

At the present time, I am not a provider for any insurance carrier. This decision was made after much thought, struggle, and consideration.

Frankly, I grew tired of having insurance companies determining what they felt was appropriate treatment for my patients, what fees for service would be, how long treatment would be, and, in many cases, having to share patient confidential information in order to get more visits covered during the course of psychotherapy. The final straw for me happened when I found out that in many situations the people within the insurance company that were making these decisions had little, if any, training in psychotherapy. I got to a point where I just could not put myself or my patients through this anymore. Therefore, with some fear and trepidation, I opted out of any managed care program and did not sign up for any insurance carrier to become a provider.

After explaining my position about insurances to potential patients, many of the people that wanted to come see me really surprised me. I found that many of them were frustrated with either the parameters of their mental health benefits, the limited providers they were allowed to see, the quality of the service they were receiving, or had become weary of having their confidential information floating around out there in cyber space. I became aware that many of these people saw paying for therapy not as a commodity to purchase, but rather as something that would bring them value for years to come. Since going to a fee for service model, I have found that when people are paying for their own psychotherapy they tend to be more invested in the process, they work harder, and very often get more out of their psychotherapy experience.

I am very aware that this creates a potential issue for some people because they want to use their insurance for psychotherapy and I do both understand and appreciate this. Many of the people that come to see me are able to get reimbursed from their insurance company for my services. In some cases, their plan provides them with Out of Network benefits which they are able to use in coming to see me. In other cases, people are able to get reimbursement depending on how their plan is written. It is hard for me to know what your insurance company will do because they are so many different carriers and so many different plans.

I suggest to everyone when this question comes up to call their insurance company, let them know that you want to come see me, and find out what they will reimburse you. I will provide you with a receipt after each session that has all the necessary information for you to submit to your insurance carrier. In this way, the insurance company will reimburse you directly.

Finally, I know that there are many choices for people when it comes to psychotherapy. I also know that psychotherapy can be a big expense. I take my work very seriously and believe that what I have to offer is both valuable and potentially life-changing. Whether you come to one session or many, I see psychotherapy as an opportunity to make an investment in yourself by becoming a healthier and more authentic person. The result of your work may positively impact your life in so many ways. In the end, you have to decide what changing your particular situation is worth to you.
